Safety Comes First

Student and staff safety is our top priority when deciding on weather-related schedule changes. Of course, we aim to keep students learning in the classroom as much as possible and to avoid extending the school year into late June, but safety always comes first.

Announcements

Weather closures, delays, and early dismissals are:

Posted on the district website home page (www.glastonburyus.org).
Sent via ParentSquare. Families select their ParentSquare notification preferences for email, text, and app notifications in their account settings. We generally do not make early morning phone calls.
Broadcast on local news stations, including channels 3, 8, 61, and 30.

School Closings

Notification by 6:00 am
Morning decisions are generally finalized and communicated between 5:00 and 6:00 am to give families adequate time to prepare.

Cold Weather Protocols
Extreme temperatures or wind chills are evaluated, but standard winter cold usually does not warrant a closing unless state or local emergency officials deem it unsafe.

New England Winter Expectations
Light snow or lingering slush is common in winter, so drivers and families should drive with extra care.

School Delays

In the morning, a standard school delay time of 2 hours will occur in the event of severe weather.
Morning preschool is cancelled when school is delayed.
If a delay occurs on an early dismissal Wednesday, the early dismissal time will be maintained.

Early Dismissals

After school has started, a standard early dismissal time of 90 minutes (1½ hours) will occur for severe weather.
Afternoon preschool is cancelled when school is dismissed early.

How Decisions Are Made

The superintendent consults special reports and local officials, starting as early as 3 or 4 am, to gather real-time data.

Local Weather Consultant: Tracks hyperlocal weather events including snowfall rates, ice accumulation, wind chill, extreme cold, and sudden weather shifts.
Town Highway Department: Reports on road conditions, snow accumulation, and plowing/salting progress.
Parks & Recreation / Grounds: Confirms whether parking lots and sidewalks are cleared.
Bus Yard & Operations: Confirms whether buses can operate safely and stay on schedule.
Regional Superintendents: Offer collaboration on surrounding town decisions, which is critical for regional programs.
Utilities & Emergency Officials: Provide updates on power outages or local flooding, if applicable.
Personal Road Checks: In some cases, the superintendent drives local roads directly to test conditions firsthand.
