Curriculum Development & Review

Curriculum Development

Glastonbury Public Schools defines curriculum as the collective content and literacies that students need to achieve identified learning outcomes.  Our curriculum is based on standards that define the knowledge and skills students should acquire during their K-12 education in order to graduate from high school college and career ready.  Curriculum is developed, implemented, and assessed for all subject areas and at all grade levels.  Curriculum development is an ongoing process that requires the collective expertise of certified staff.

Curriculum Review

Glastonbury Public Schools routinely reviews and updates the curriculum taught in our schools. Regularly reviewing and improving our curriculum ensures that every Glastonbury student receives a rigorous and relevant education.

Review Process

Each of our curriculum areas undergoes a review every five years. In any given year, there are three or four active curriculum review committees. The committees evaluate both what we teach students and how we teach students. They review the entire program, including content and assessment; teaching and learning; teacher professional development; communication and outreach; and operations and resources.

Windows and Mirrors

The curriculum is also examined through an equity lens. Our district is committed to providing students with “mirrors” reflecting their own experiences and “windows'' into experiences different from their own.

Curriculum Review Reports

The review process provides us with valuable insights and feedback that spur change. At the end of the process, the curriculum director presents a report to the Board of Education. These comprehensive reports outline areas of strength and recommendations for changes. Directors set both short and long-term goals. For example, a short-term goal might be to add guest speakers and field trip offerings for a particular unit of study. A long-term goal might be to develop a new course in response to our changing world.

Reviews Currently Underway

The followiing curriculum areas are under review during the 2024-2025 school year. Reports on these reviews will be presented to the Board of Education during the Fall of 2025.
