Staff Professional Learning
Professional Learning (PL) at Glastonbury Public Schools
The professional growth of our staff is critical to the progress of our school system. All staff members participate in ongoing learning that directly impacts their success in meeting student needs.
Professional learning takes many forms, our staff members participate in workshops, webinars, independent study, research, and study groups. PL activities developed internally at Glastonbury Public Schools are carefully designed to align with our district goals and core values such as building relationships, fostering curiosity, and promoting active student learning. We also emphasize support for both students and staff well-being. We aim to provide individual learning experiences that are meaningful and relevant to our dedicated employees. Sessions are most often led by in-district staff.
Educator Professional Learning
Educator PL Schedule
Educators attend professional learning sessions during the summer months, at the beginning of the school year, in the fall, and in the spring.
All educators participate in two full professional learning days every year. One is scheduled just before the start of school. The other takes place on Election Day. Elementary educators also attend sessions on Wednesday afternoons except during the winter months (December through February). Secondary educators attend department sessions throughout the year. Professional learning is also supported during each school's Monthly faculty meetings.
PL for New Teachers
Beginning teachers receive professional support over several years. They reflect on their practice, analyze student data and outcomes, and identify areas for their growth and improvement. In addition, they are paired with seasoned teachers who mentor them for two years.
Mandated Training
All staff complete state mandated training in areas such as DCF reporting, bullying, sexual harassment, and OSHA. The district also provides professional learning that covers district policies and procedures such as overnight chaperone training and the acceptable use of technology.
PDEC
Glastonbury Public Schools' Professional Development and Evaluation Committee (PDEC) includes educators from across grade levels and subject areas. Together, they
Recommend, develop, and evaluate the professional learning activities of certified staff in the district
Guide the district's educator evaluation and support plan
PDEC ensures our PL activities are tied directly to our district's strategic plan, the Connecticut Standards for Professional Learning, and the needs of our students and staff.
