Composting
Elementary Students are Composting
Many thanks to our school principals, food services, facilities, and cafeteria staff for helping with this program!
Elementary students are being thoughtful when discarding their lunch waste. Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, food and lunch trays go in the compost bin. Recyclables go in the recycle bin. And garbage goes into the trash bin.
After a successful trial with the programs at Eastbury, each of our five elementary schools have launched composting in their cafeterias. The district has contracted with Blue Earth Compost to collect the school compost bags weekly. Blue Earth converts the material into renewable and nutrient-rich compost for farmers and families. The estimated cost to the district for pick-up and cleaning is $300 per month per school. It is included in the food services budget.
We look forward to expanding the composting program to upper grades in the coming years. We expect it to go smoothly since the students advancing through those grades will already be familiar.
