Scientific Research Based Intervention (SRBI) 

New requirements by the Connecticut State Department of Education focus on methods to address student learning needs. All Connecticut school districts are required to use a framework entitled Scientific Research Based Intervention (SRBI) to address this mandate. 

SRBI is designed to help schools focus on classroom instruction and interventions that are matched to student needs. Glastonbury Public Schools welcomes the opportunity to provide information about the connection of SRBI to education in our schools. SRBI Continuum of Support

The SRBI framework has three "tiers." Each tier provides specific types and degrees of student support within the school setting.

Tier 3: 

The school provides more individualized intensive instruction for  students who need the most support.

Tier 2: 

The school provides help for students who need more support through  small group intensive instruction over a short period of time.

Tier 1: 

All children receive high quality curriculum and differentiated instruction  in the general education classroom or program.

Benefits of SRBI

Through SRBI, students receive services based on academic or behavioral needs. When a need is identified using assessment data, interventions are developed. 

School personnel monitor student progress closely to be sure the interventions are appropriate and successful.

SRBI is a way for students to gain needed instruction without labels or programs associated with special needs services.

There are many academic terms used in discussions of the Scientific Research Based Interventions (SRBI) process. You will find definitions for several important SRBI terms below. 

Differentiation: instructional adaptations made in the classroom to support the diverse learning styles and needs of all students. 

Intervention: a method, program, or instructional condition that provides additional learning support. 

Progress Monitoring: the practice of frequently assessing a student's academic or behavioral achievement. Assessment results provide information to help teachers evaluate student needs and to match instruction to meet those needs. 

Universal Assessment: an academic or behavioral test, administered to all students at a given grade level, at least three times during the school year. It is used to identify those students in need of additional interventions.
